Neil O’Riordan is the Chief Sports Writer of The Irish Sun. Not unlike the tale recounted by The Human League in ‘Don’t You Want Me Baby’, he was working as a lounge boy when he was first offered work experience in The Irish Sun in transition year way back in 1994. Neil had his first article published in 1995 and worked for the newspaper on a part-time basis in his final year in school and four years studying History & Political Science in Trinity College. He became a full-time member of staff upon graduation and was appointed Chief Sports Writer in 2001. Although he has covered World Cups, European Championships, Olympics and Rugby World Cups, he is at his happiest at a League of Ireland ground. He especially loves 0-0 draws at the Carlisle Grounds in November when there is a gale blowing in from the Irish Sea. Honestly. His statistics books are the stuff of legend in the League of Ireland, with managers often marvelling at the colour-coding of players’ appearances and goals to allow easy identification of different competitions. This may explain why he is known to some as Statto.
